. >> attorney general harris, you have come out in support of senator feinstein's ban on assault weapons. but of the proposals on the table. whether it's universal background checks or assault weapons ban. is there one you think is most important? i think gun control advocates will say, it's all important. is there one -- if you have to choose one, as it may come down, to it may not be -- is there one that you think would have the biggest impact? >> well, as you have your question proposes, this is not a monolith, each issue is different. assault weapons should be taken off the streets. i've seen them kill babies and police officers, not intended use. the reality is, the background checks, i think, as proved by our program in california, really does give law enforcement a great tool. once someone has been found to be prohibited from owning a gun, we know who has the guns and we can take the guns. and so as a law enforcement tool throughout the country. if we nationalize background checks, made it a requirement in all states, we could do a lot in terms of public safety. the chief of polic
